The Published Lawyer

Serving up the law with an order of freelance writing on the side

About

The Published Lawyer is a resource for lawyers who are interested in writing, blogging and getting their work published.

Why do lawyers write, or want to write, when that’s what lawyers already do?  Make no mistake.  The Published Lawyer is all about freelance writing–think glossy magazines, journals, trade publications, books, and personal and professional blogging, not the ordinary legal writing lawyers learn in law school and get paid to do by clients or other attorneys, such as when they contract to perform legal research and writing services.

Writing and getting published can open doors for lawyers.  It can also bring in extra cash to help with student loan repayment, the mortgage or retirement accounts.

  • Freelance writing is a way lawyers can stay connected and involved with the law on their own terms when they take a career detour or timeout.
  • Writing can help lawyers re-enter the profession or get a foot in the door by serving as a resume boost.
  • Freelance writing can help lawyers get noticed, online and offline.
  • Writing can enhance visibility and help lawyers stand out, sometimes as experts in a given niche, ultimately increasing their attractiveness to prospective employers and clients.
  • Freelance writing can help lawyers retain their existing jobs, effectively appearing more valuable to existing employers–in this economy, that’s an asset.
  • Writing can serve as a transitional bridge between the law and another pursuit, including an eventually move out of the law into full-time freelancing.
  • Freelance writing can help lawyer parents, especially stay-at-home parents, and retired lawyers, feel intellectually engaged and challenged, despite not having an office to report to each day.

Julie Tower-Pierce, author of Staying at Home, Staying in the Law: A Guide to Remaining Active in the Legal Profession While Pursuing Your Dreams, is the driver behind The Published Lawyer wheel.  The Published Lawyer emerges from her own freelance writing, blogging and teaching experiences, and from the curiosity and inquiries she encounters and receives from other lawyers who dream about writing as a hobby, complement to their careers, or as an alternative career.
